Stuttering

One of the services provided by Child Psychotherapist Dr. Ömer Uçur at his office in Nişantaşı, Istanbul, is the treatment of stuttering. Stuttering is a condition characterized by disruptions in the fluency of speech, which can negatively affect communication skills, especially during childhood. Dr. Ömer Uçur offers effective and scientifically grounded treatment methods for children experiencing stuttering at his office located in the central area of Istanbul, Nişantaşı.

The treatment steps in Dr. Uçur's stuttering therapy include:

Evaluation and Diagnosis:

The treatment process begins with an assessment of the child's speech fluency and the severity of the stuttering. During this phase, a comprehensive evaluation is conducted to analyze the child's condition.

Individual Therapy Plan:

Based on the evaluation results, an individualized therapy plan is created according to the child's specific needs. A personalized approach is applied for each child at Dr. Uçur's office in Nişantaşı.

Speech Therapy:

The main part of the treatment involves therapy techniques aimed at improving speech fluency. In this process, the child's breath control, word production, and fluency skills are developed. This phase is conducted by a Speech-Language Therapist (SLT).

Psychological Support:

Stuttering can often lead to issues with self-confidence and social anxiety. Dr. Uçur focuses not only on speech improvement but also on the child's psychological development during the treatment process.

Family Counseling:

As part of the treatment, families are also provided with guidance. It is important to inform parents about how they can support their child at home during the process.

Monitoring and Progress Tracking:

Throughout the treatment process, the child's progress is regularly monitored, and the therapy plan is updated if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can stuttering really improve?

Yes, stuttering can improve, but in cases with a genetic component, complete recovery may not be possible. However, this does not mean it is impossible for it to improve. The chances of improvement are lower if support is sought only through speech therapy without consulting a child psychiatrist first.

What is the main treatment for stuttering?

First, the child should see a child psychiatrist to understand any co-occurring diagnoses associated with the stuttering. Necessary treatment and therapy should be initiated. Following that, speech therapy can be started with the recommendation of your doctor. Additionally, the speech therapy process often needs to be conducted in parallel with other treatments. Otherwise, stuttering treatment may not be fully effective.

We’ve had speech therapy several times, but it hasn’t improved. We no longer hope that the stuttering will go away. Is there still hope?

If the child has not yet seen a child psychiatrist, there is still hope. For example, in a child with an anxiety disorder who hasn't received the necessary support, stuttering may not fully improve, even if there is no genetic component to it.
